The term, “limited edition” simply means a sculpture where the number of castings is pre-determined. Typically, the smaller the edition size, the more exclusive the piece is, and thus represents a higher value. Each casting from the edition is numbered to identify it. Due to the “hands on” character of each step involved, every casting will contain small differences from all others making it truly an individual. Douwe’s limited editions average between 10 and 25. Each piece is cast using only the finest art bronze alloy and old world hot patinas.

Already an extremely imposing thoroughbred stallion in life, this statue completely dominates its’ site at 110% scale. We were lucky enough to have captured this legendary stallions’ measurements a few months prior to his passing which proved priceless during the sculpt. I very much welcomed the opportunity to sculpt a stallion, later in life as a mature, breeding animal.

Bronze and stainless steel
One half life size 3.5' tall
It is a study in portraying ethereal things like wind, water and reflections in three-dimensional metal. It is a study in serenity and stillness coupled with suggested movement. It is a unique piece because while being an extremely large and impressive sculpture, because it fills a cylindrical space, it occupies very little floor space, making it suitable for many locations, inside and out.

The culmination of years of thinking about this concept. I had been mentally sculpting this piece for a long time before I ever stole the time between commissions to sculpt it. I was fascinated by the idea of representing a reflection, which physically doesn’t exist, with a solid sculpture. This is a ground-breaking concept, and both the small version and the life-size have been hugely successful.

The ‘Reflections’ sculpture is the culmination of years of thinking about this concept. I was fascinated by the idea of representing a reflection, which physically doesn’t exist, with a solid sculpture. It is a rare combination of bronze and stainless steel castings for the images. A bronze horse drinking is confronted with a stainless steel reflection. Stainless rings and bronze lilies define the water surface.

This bronze was the genesis for "America's Response Monument" overlooking Ground Zero and featured in the movie "12 Strong". "De Oppresso Liber" is the Green Berets' motto. Early in 2002, after seeing the first released images of the "horse soldiers" I began sculpting this piece. I was fascinated by the visual imagery as well as the symbolism of a 21st century western soldier working symbiotically with an ancient eastern mountain horse to combat tyranny and oppression. Close collaboration with the actual "horse soldiers" ensured the accuracy of the piece. 18"and 9” tall editions are available.

With this piece I wanted to convey the power, athleticism and love of the sport a good jumper possesses. Being challenged by representing a horse in mid-air, the stainless steel jump solved the problem in an elegant and simple way.

With this piece I wanted to capture the instantaneous drama and action on the cross-country course. I purposed to sculpt extremely quickly so as to capture the spontaneity which is so signatory of the event.
This is a brand-new piece, sculpted especially for this show. This is casting number one of the edition.

One of my very favorite pieces. This concept came to my mind one night, as I lay awake after drinking too much coffee with dinner. This is one of those wonderful pieces that just created itself. Within three days, it was completed. I am fascinated by the challenges and possibilities presented by the use of negative space, where empty space is actually used in such a way as to allow the viewer’s mind to complete the thought.

This ambitious piece required over three years to complete. A 12th centruy mounted Samurai is portrayed with incredible attention to detail and historical fidelity. Perched on a wind-whipped mountainside, the archer prepares to loose a signaling arrow into the abyss below. Because of the amount of work involved to create each piece, only seven castings will ever be produced, each one utilizing a different yet authentic color scheme.

One of my most popular pieces. The medieval warhorse was the equivalent of today’s battle tank. Though our concept of a “breed” as a closed gene pool would be foreign to our ancestors, certain types came to be favored. A type now known as the “Great Horse” of Europe could very generally be described as a Percheron warmblood/lusitano cross... at least in terms of physical appearance.

Second in the “Warhorse” series is this Arabic warhorse, depicting a classic mount of the Ottomon empire during the 17th and 18th centuries. The scaled armor on the top of the head/neck was to resist the common downward sword stroke and protect the spine and major nerves in the area. Tassles, which are prevalent in the Middle East, originally served the purpose of keeping away flies and mosquitoes, but quickly became a decorative device as well.

I love the raw power captured in this piece. I purposely chose to sculpt this piece as quickly as I could so as to keep the spontaneity alive. I personally have always loved a strong profile, whether it be on a horse, a dog or a person. The rich green verdigris patina on this piece accentuates the piece perfectly. A powerful piece in a nice sized package!

I am very often surprised at how much I like my rough sketches before they are cleaned up. This piece is an exploration in creating a work utilizing that spontaneous effect to capture not only a fleeting moment but also the physical and emotional contrasts this mare and stallion.

From the book of Job, chapter 39
“Hast thou given the horse strength? Hast thou clothed his neck with thunder? Canst thou make him afraid as a grasshopper? The glory of his nostrils is terrible. He paweth in the valley, and rejoiceth in his strength: he goeth on to meet the armed men. He mocketh at fear, and is not affrighted; neither turneth he back from the sword. The quiver rattleth against him, the glittering spear and the shield. He swalloweth the ground with fierceness and rage: neither believeth he that it is the sound of the trumpet. He saith among the trumpets, Ha, ha; and he smelleth the battle afar off, the thunder of the captains, and the shouting”.

I consciously sculpted this piece to fill a cylindrically shaped area, which allows it to dominate a room without taking up much floor space. It is carefully sculpted to be viewable from all angles. I have always been fascinated by working spiral movement into a piece, whether human or animal. I just love the sheer beauty of a mother and her baby.

This half life-size bust has been a tremendous success due in part to the combination of power, beauty and movement. This very masculine horse is filled with life and yet endowed with a gentle expression. The bridle is exquisitely detailed. The entire piece forms a spiral that extends into the base by the mane.

For me, this half life-size sculpture embodies the power and excitement of a great gaited horse rounding the final turn. As I sculpted De Oppresso Liber, I became fascinated with the history and “look” of the Asian Mountain horses. They provide an interesting cross between the middle-eastern horse and tack, with a mountain “wildness” added into the equation.
